Week 1 - scrumble the first

Not quite the beginning of the new year yet, but this is my first weekly scrumble. Made using both knitting and crochet, it contains a few fine-weight handpainted yarns (including a silk chenille), along with other chenille, a bit of cotton, a few synthetics for glitz and some sock yarn. The crochet bullions were done in a single ply silk. The yellow and gold yarn outlining the bullion clusters was still in my stash, bought in Germany in the '80s.
size approximately 15cm (6") x 17cm (6.5")

  3. I congratulate you with a new project. It will be successful as well as all your projects. But I would love to know, what will you do with all these scrumbles? ;)

  4. Thanks Ute (nice to meet you again here) and Chrisy (always good to meet a fellow Brizzy girl)

Antonina, quite often at shows and workshops people ask to purchase my freeform samples, and so far I have always said no because the pieces were either destined for particular projects that I had in mind, or because I wanted to develop more patches to go with them to see what eventuated...but perhaps one day I will part with some of these...perhaps at Wonderwool this year; or who knows, maybe eventually I'll even go down the Etsy track!

  9. I'm curious, if you don't mind answering this question. This is such an ornate scrumble -- just beautiful -- where did you start it? Was it the bullions, the circular motif? Something else.

Again, thank you for sharing, your work is always inspiring to me.

  10. I began this one with some random knitting (the two yellow sections in the lower centre) then added a couple of rows of Tunisian crochet, then worked the bullion stitches off that. The leaf and flower were made separate to the main scrumble, then joined on with a couple of crochet slip stitches. The scallops were added to the edges of the leaf after it was attached.

  11. Thanks. Very insightful. I would have guessed that it worked out from the separate pieces.

  13. Hi Margie,
There is no distributor for my books in South Africa, but I can supply you direct if you can pay via Paypal. 'Freeform: serendipitous designs for knitting & crochet' (AU$35.00 + $12.20 postage) is my most comprehensive book; it would not only give you lots of ideas on how to get started, it would also take you right through to turning your scrumbles into art-to-wear garments. Send me a message through the contact form at my website - www.knotjustknitting.com - and I will get back to you with details of how to purchase.
